Apps on apps (Part 2)

5. Scrabble

This one is really becoming obsolete now, but for my main mates that don’t rock iphones, like my wife, sisters-in-law, soon-to-be brother-in-law, and several other dudes, this one keeps the games crackin. It’s super slow though, and has been messing up lately, and the chat function is really weak. It does have a built in dictionary and shuffle function though, which is cool. If you ask me though, Words With Friends kills it.

6. Boxcar

Boxcar makes Facebook and TweetDeck push. It also works with tons of other programs, but I just use it for those two. Any Facebook notifications or Twitter DMs or @replys are pushed to me via Boxcar. It throws an alert up to the main screen that tells you the message or comment or whatever. When you view it in Boxcar, you can set it to use your preferred Facebook or Twitter app to respond or comment again or whatever. Also cool.

7. PS Mobile

PS stands for Photoshop and mobile means its on your phone. Dope. This smooth free little baby allows you to crop, rotate, flip, mess with exposure, saturation, tint, or convert your pictures to black & white. It’s also got sketch and soft focus effects, plus tons of cool frame options and other effects. There’s also back and forward buttons that let you cycle through the changes you’ve made, like the history function in the real Photoshop. It’s pretty much the coolest and easiest fee photography app out there. I deleted three other photo apps when I added this.

8. SuperDial

This little daddy is my speed dialer. You can set it to maintain up to 30 contacts, but I only use it for nine. When you open the app, it immediately pops up your list of speed dial contacts via their picture. Just tap the pic and the phone is ringing. Super cool. Super simple.

9. Things

NOTE: This app has recently been replaced by another, much better app called 2Do. Things was ok, but it was a little clunky, and lacked some of the great functionality of 2Do. Things required you to download a separate app on your computer, and then sync to it. 2Do uses your iCal to do list to sync, and if you organize everything based on iCal like I do, you’ll really dig this one. You can set it to send you alerts, emails, or basically any other type of notification. My only complaint is that it does not yet support push, but I bet they will roll it out soon. This is by far the best “To Do” app out there. Get it.

I got apps on apps baby, watcha want?

I know, I know. I am a raging iPhone lunatic, but what can I say? The thing is radical. And by the way, this new fancy schmancy Google phone is never going to touch it. Game over.

Now, the real reason for this bodacious post is to tell you dudes all about my rockin’ app magic.

The picture to the right is a screen shot from my phone showing some sweet apps and some sweet face melting push functionality. These babies are cool, and you should have them too. These are the ones I use most so naturally I’ve got em stacked on the front page like freeze pops and Eggo’s in the icebox.

I’m going to skip over the Calendar, Camera, Photos, Safari, Facebook, Weather, Google, & Maps apps because dope though they are, everyone’s got em.

My Top 9 (in no particular order)

1. Tweetdeck

This app is both free and cool, although I really don’t use it a whole lot. Its clearly a Twitter app and the coolest thing about it is that you can stack up all kinds of lists and groups and things on different pages, if you are into that sort of thing. This is cool because you don’t ever have to see the lame updates from people you feel pressured to follow, but don’t really care what they say. Which begs the question: What’s the point of following them? The answer, I imagine, is so they will follow you, and probably ignore you too. Why are we doing this again?

2. eBuddy Pro

I know this one is kinda lame, but its cool for when you are taking a dump or something. Actually, that’s all an iPhone really is isn’t it? Dump entertainment. Anyway, this is a simple chat client that allows you to sign in (and stay signed in) to all of your favorite chat programs like MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, AIM, Google Talk, Facebook, MySpace, and a few others). It also supports push so you are notified anytime anyone hits you up with a chizzat. It’s super easy to use, and you can send pictures from within the chat, like for example a picture of yourself taking a dump.

3. Movies

This app is pretty much a Netflix client that allows you to stay logged into your account, manage your queue, see what’s new, and search movies. It also functions as a local theater guide with showtimes and everything, which is especially cool if you are in a town you are unfamiliar with. Just type in a zip code and it will show you all the theaters nearby within certain mileage distances. It’s cool.

4. Words With Friends

This baby gets the award for best app of all time by me and thousands of other iphone aficionados who have undoubtedly ruined all their real life relationships in pursuit of these less-satisfying yet powerfully addicting and mind numbingly entertaining digital ones. A friend of mine who used to be an actual crackhead in a former life compared the app to taking his first hit off the rock. Yikes. Anyway, for those of you brain dead cavemen who live under rocks and still use Motorola Star-Tacs, this is essentially Scrabble for the iPhone, only way better. It’s much faster, much easier, and much more fun. You can chat with your opponent from within the game and you can enable it to send you a push notification (and badge) every time it’s your turn to play. Careful though, it will own you.

Stay tuned for wicked reviews of the rest of my top 9 apps, which will come soon in a future yet equally sweet post.
