The Pledge of Allegiance

Scram brought up an interesting story about a 10 year old in West Fork, AR who has refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance until there is truly “liberty and justice for all” which, as the boy says, will not exist until gays and lesbians have the right to marry.

He’s got a good point, too.

It doesn’t make any difference to me if same sex couples get married or not, and it is not really a government issue anyway so I am not totally sure why there are laws about this type of thing. Also, as a guy who goes to a lot of weddings, and sees much of the behind the scenes planning that goes on, I am 100% certain that any gay couple can get married whenever they want, at whatever place that will have them, by whomever they choose. There is nothing stopping them. Police will not bust through the doors and break everything up.

Why? Because no one cares.

It’s not real. It’s just a formal commitment that people can make whenever they feel like it – and these days it doesn’t make any difference anyway, because people break that commitment just as often as they make it.

As far as having a marriage license, who cares? I have never done anything with my marriage license. It’s just a fancy piece of paper with a couple signatures on it that sits in an envelope somewhere. And for all you know, all those signatures could be forgeries.

I’m sure I get some kind of tax break or something because of it, which I don’t completely understand either. Anyone can claim anyone else as their dependent, so what’s the difference? I’m also sure the Great State of Arkansas officially “recognizes” my marriage too, but frankly I don’t give a shit what the State of Arkansas recognizes. If they tell me my name is Roger and I am from Delaware then okay. Who cares? My life is still exactly the same. I don’t need anyones official recognition of anything for it to be real.

Now, like I said before, the kid’s got a point about the pledge. I think the pledge is total bullshit right from the start, actually. I am not pledging my allegiance to anything except Jesus and my family. If my country tries to get in between either of those things, me and my family (and Jesus, possibly) will be on the first flight out of here.

And saying that there is “liberty and justice for all” doesn’t make it true. Like the guy from CNN says in the clip, same-sex marriage keeps coming up for the vote and state after state keeps shooting it down. So unfortunately, that’s just where we are right now. The people of the United States have decided that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to marry, even though straight couples can do whatever the hell they want. Say what you will about right and wrong, but equality is equality, it’s sort of an all-or-nothing type thing. If we are going to vote against equality, then we can’t say that we find all people equal. Or we can, but we have to know that we are liars.

I’m sure this will change eventually, just like all other things have changed in the past. Women got the vote, slavery got abolished, etc. I’m not saying it will be easy, but it will happen sooner or later. I am not going to join the fight for it because I honestly don’t care what the government thinks. I officially disagree with the government about a lot of things. If you are gay and you want to marry your homeboy, go for it. I’ll even shoot the wedding for you.

But screw the pledge, it doesn’t mean anything to me. How many of you would literally take a bullet for your country? Not me dude. I’ve got a family. That may sound selfish, but its true.

Obama Has Failed Me.

IMG_0589On June 22, 2009 President Barack Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This act, among other things that I don’t care about, will

make

cloves

illegal.

That’s right.

ILLEGAL.

Why? Because, apparently, only children like flavors. The act bans all flavored tobacco sales in the United States except for menthol (which is complete bullshit). This is based on the assumption that the tobacco companies of the world are marketing to children with the introduction of tasty flavors such as strawberry, grape, cherry, mint, wintergreen, and yes, cloves.

Well guess what Mr. President – I am a 28 year old American (who proudly voted for you) and I like flavors too. Furthermore, it is already illegal for kids under 18 to smoke. So now what? It’s still illegal, but now it’s illegal for me to smoke those crackly, sweet, Christmas flavored smokey treats too. Also, I would like to add that kids don’t start smoking becuase they like all the trendy flavors. They smoke because, no matter what anyone says, it is cool. It will always be somewhat cool to smoke, ever since James Dean lit up, all kids want to be a Rebel Without A Cause, too. It may not be cool to their parents, but that is exactly what makes it cool.

I understand that smoking is unhealthy, but I think that everyone likes to have a thing that they do despite the health risks associated with it (and I think you might know a thing or two about smoking yourself, Mr. President).

If we start banning unhealthy things because they are artificially (or naturally) flavored to make them more enticing, perhaps to children, then I suggest we take Lucky Charms, Count Chocula, Cookie Crisp, Frosted Flakes, and every other cereal off the shelves except for All Bran. And for that matter, why not get rid of Fruit Roll Ups, Fruit Snacks, Jelly Beans, and Gummi Bears? And while we’re at it, how about we just delete the whole soda and chips aisle all together? Hell, since we’re on a roll, why don’t we just shut down the entire mainstream grocery empire and force everyone to shop at Fresh Market and Whole Foods?

What a wonderful world it would be.

Before long we will all be robots eating nutrition supplement pills and driving fully electric vehicles.

And I will spend this fall and winter sitting on my porch with a good friend, watching the leaves change, wearing a fleece jacket, shifting my back to shield my neck from the crisp northern wind, drinking a Hornsby’s, smoking nothing.

Thanks a lot jackass.

We Are Wasting Our Time

What do you want more of in your life?

What do you want less of?

Why aren’t we doing more of what we want and less of what we don’t?

Why?

The fact that people do things they don’t want to do, and don’t do things they specifically want to do, completely confuddles me.

I understand that some people have shitty jobs that they hate, and some people literally can’t get out of those jobs. But I have a feeling that most people never really try to get out of them. They use their jobs as an excuse to keep doing nothing. Or they aren’t sure what they want to do, so they never do anything.

But to that I say bullshit.

How many people say “Man, I really need to quit smoking.” and then light up another cigarette? I know addiction is a powerful thing, but it can’t be that powerful. It really can’t. If it is then mankind is surely doomed. Why do you keep buying cigarettes? Why do you keep lighting them and smoking them? How do you intend to quit if you are not quitting? It makes no sense to me. Is this really what is happening to our society? Because that is pretty depressing. Are we really that powerless? Or are we just completely lazy?

Either way I think it’s fairly easy to admit that something is wrong here. Being addicted to smoking is one issue, but it sets the stage for this huge waste of potential that is happening all over the place.

Make a list of things that you do on a daily or weekly basis, and then make a list of things you wish you did on a daily or weekly basis. Compare the lists. And then make a list of things you are sick of doing on a daily or weekly basis.

Now do it.

One time I was drinking a nice mug of coffee on a really cold day in Fayetteville and I saw a friend of mine on campus and stopped to chat for a second. I was sipping my warm coffee and she said

“Man, that looks good. I wish I could drink coffee.”

“Why can’t you?” I asked.

“I don’t like it.” She said.

What? That makes no sense to me. None whatsoever. Number one – you can drink coffee; number two – if you don’t like it, why would you want to drink it? There are plenty of other satisfying hot drinks for a cold winters day.

So here is my advice for life:

1. Do what you want.

2. Stop doing what you don’t want.

Does that make sense? Is it simple enough? If it seems like too much, just focus on number one, then move on to number two when you are ready.

But, why wouldn’t you be ready?
