Scram brought up an interesting story about a 10 year old in West Fork, AR who has refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance until there is truly “liberty and justice for all” which, as the boy says, will not exist until gays and lesbians have the right to marry.
He’s got a good point, too.
It doesn’t make any difference to me if same sex couples get married or not, and it is not really a government issue anyway so I am not totally sure why there are laws about this type of thing. Also, as a guy who goes to a lot of weddings, and sees much of the behind the scenes planning that goes on, I am 100% certain that any gay couple can get married whenever they want, at whatever place that will have them, by whomever they choose. There is nothing stopping them. Police will not bust through the doors and break everything up.
Why? Because no one cares.
It’s not real. It’s just a formal commitment that people can make whenever they feel like it – and these days it doesn’t make any difference anyway, because people break that commitment just as often as they make it.
As far as having a marriage license, who cares? I have never done anything with my marriage license. It’s just a fancy piece of paper with a couple signatures on it that sits in an envelope somewhere. And for all you know, all those signatures could be forgeries.
I’m sure I get some kind of tax break or something because of it, which I don’t completely understand either. Anyone can claim anyone else as their dependent, so what’s the difference? I’m also sure the Great State of Arkansas officially “recognizes” my marriage too, but frankly I don’t give a shit what the State of Arkansas recognizes. If they tell me my name is Roger and I am from Delaware then okay. Who cares? My life is still exactly the same. I don’t need anyones official recognition of anything for it to be real.
Now, like I said before, the kid’s got a point about the pledge. I think the pledge is total bullshit right from the start, actually. I am not pledging my allegiance to anything except Jesus and my family. If my country tries to get in between either of those things, me and my family (and Jesus, possibly) will be on the first flight out of here.
And saying that there is “liberty and justice for all” doesn’t make it true. Like the guy from CNN says in the clip, same-sex marriage keeps coming up for the vote and state after state keeps shooting it down. So unfortunately, that’s just where we are right now. The people of the United States have decided that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to marry, even though straight couples can do whatever the hell they want. Say what you will about right and wrong, but equality is equality, it’s sort of an all-or-nothing type thing. If we are going to vote against equality, then we can’t say that we find all people equal. Or we can, but we have to know that we are liars.
I’m sure this will change eventually, just like all other things have changed in the past. Women got the vote, slavery got abolished, etc. I’m not saying it will be easy, but it will happen sooner or later. I am not going to join the fight for it because I honestly don’t care what the government thinks. I officially disagree with the government about a lot of things. If you are gay and you want to marry your homeboy, go for it. I’ll even shoot the wedding for you.
But screw the pledge, it doesn’t mean anything to me. How many of you would literally take a bullet for your country? Not me dude. I’ve got a family. That may sound selfish, but its true.
